3 tools to streamline your writing

Writing can be difficult - no matter if you’re a professional or a university graduate. It can be especially challenging being creative and grammatically correct when you have several conflicting deadlines. This can lead to stress, and stress can lead to forgetfulness. So, it’s important to take all measures to ensure your work is error free and your tone of voice is appropriate.

To combat some of these errors, we've compiled a list of handy tools to streamline your writing to become more efficient, productive and creative.

Grammarly

Grammarly is a free online writing assistant that checks grammar, spelling and plagiarism. It is a helpful tool that provides insights into overlooked mistakes that can be detrimental to your writing. The app instantly checks your copy and provides recommendations for punctuation, spelling errors and dialect.

OneLook Reverse Dictionary and Thesaurus

This tool lets you describe a concept and reveals a list of words or phrases related. If you have used the same adjective or verb several times or if you can’t remember the word, this tool will help. For example, OneLook can provide you with a list of suggestions for a word by only writing its definition. It can also explore synonyms and answer basic identification questions.

Hemingway App

The Hemingway App is an editor platform that identifies long and complex sentences, passive voice, jargon, and unnecessary adverbs. The app also highlights dense sentences and recommends where to spilt sentences or how to make the copy more digestible. This is a great platform to help writers learn how to avoid weakening phrases and write in an active voice.

Remember these are not the be-all and end-all tools to use, but they are helpful platforms to encourage you to be conscientious when writing.

At Elevate, we like to use these tools to help spark creativity and check for basic errors. However, we do recommend using the traditional method of printing a document, proofing using a ruler, and reading out loud. We also enlist team members to triple-check a document before it's sent to the client – so when you’re writing at work, ask a friend, family member or colleague to spare 10 minutes to proof your work!

If you need help with copywriting, whether it be media relations, internal communications or digital content, contact us at Elevate and we can help develop strategic and meaningful content to grow your brand.
