Why PR is an awesome industry to work in

Today the representation of the PR industry is often dramatised, particularly in Hollywood where practitioners like Sex and the City’s Samantha Jones utilise billable hours attending A-list parties and rubbing shoulders with the likes of Brangelina (may they rest in peace). This is not even close to being true but I remain a huge advocate for the public relations industry as being a highly rewarding industry that deserves the cinematic hype.

To remove any doubts you may have, here are my top five reasons for why public relations is an awesome industry to work in:

1.    No two days are the same

One of the best things about working in public relations is the variety of wacky and wonderful responsibilities that come with the job. Whether I’m in the office producing social media schedules, running out the door to facilitate a last-minute TV interview or filling in at a photo opportunity as a (somewhat plus-sized) hand model, no two days are alike and many days are just downright unpredictable! An industry like public relations eradicates the traditional work day boredom and inserts variety into the nine to five.

2.    Provides rewarding experiences

Working intimately with interesting businesses of all types and sizes is a huge perk of working in the public relations industry. As communication professionals, we quickly learn the ins and outs of our clients’ business and become an integral part of their team. We become so passionate about telling our client’s stories that achieving great results for them puts us on a massive high! It’s such a rewarding feeling to see your work making a difference to businesses that you believe in and want to see succeed.

3.    Encourages brain power

It’s hard to find a career that encourages both creativity and logical thinking in the same environment. In public relations, it’s a race to push your communications to the next level, which involves a whole lot of brain power, creativity and originality. It’s a challenging industry with very little downtime, but it provides the perfect environment for communication professionals who love to solve problems with out of the box solutions.

4.    People-centric

From a young age I was always told I could talk my mother’s ears off. Little did she know I would be able to make a career out of it! Public relations is all about communicating and maintaining relationships, whether it be with a client, their stakeholders or the media – you’re always interacting. What other industry does it pay to talk?

5.    Evolving constantly

We are in an age where the media is evolving at a rapid rate and the tools we currently use to develop, distribute and measure content will be obsolete in a couple of years. Public relations is the perfect industry for people who hate to sit still and love utilising new technology and trends. A position in communication requires a high level of intellectual curiosity and a drive to never stop learning.
