Three overlooked platforms to enhance your social media strategy

Three overlooked platforms to enhance your social media strategy

Are you trying to achieve cut through on social media but just aren’t reaching the right audiences? Maybe you’re using the wrong platform.

I’m sure you’ve been told time and time again to use social media and that “...you need to be on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Instagram to increase brand awareness", but are these really the right platforms to reach your target markets? To effectively relate to your stakeholders, you need to put yourself in their shoes and understand which social channels they use. Once you have a better understanding, you need to immerse yourself in those platforms!

Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Instagram are dominating social media, however ‘underdog’ platforms like Pinterest, Reddit and Quora are extremely underrated yet still have the potential to reach great masses of people. These platforms are another way to separate yourself from the noise on the other channels while still targeting relevant stakeholders. With mobile accessibility and social connectivity being readily available across the globe; how can we leverage this opportunity to further our communication?

Pinterest
Pinterest is a popular site that is used like a bulletin board or a web-based pin board. The way users interact with the platform is by saving or ‘pinning’ images to different boards in their collections. This is a network where people come to seek inspiration for ideas or new products to buy or advice to use. A number of reports show that pinners have actually made purchases after seeing ‘Promoted Pins’ and refer to saved pins while out shopping.

Pinterest users:

  • 250 million monthly active users
  • Over 175 billion pins
  • Two-thirds of pins represent brands and products

Reddit
Reddit is a social network that is used as a community for answering questions and addressing concerns. Redditors are a unique market and have been known to call out businesses that advertise / promote their brand on the platform – so we recommend taking a creative approach before endorsing your products or services on the site. Strategic ways to go about targeting users is to conduct “Ask Me Anything” sessions to encourage conversation between the user and the brand’s manager or content coordinator.

Reddit users:

  • 274 million monthly active users
  • Average page views total to 8 billion
  • Average visit time is 13 minutes

Quora
Quora is a Q&A platform that relies on the sharing of communal knowledge and allows any user (who has a thorough understanding of the subject) to contribute to the collection and discussion of free-access information. Quora is a great two-way communication channel for brand managers to establish authority and offer advice or teach users about their product or services.

Quora users:

  • 80 million active users
  • Average 3,000 – 5,000 questions asked daily
